Newborn Circumcision

Newborn Circumcision — $400

Circumcision is considered an elective procedure. There are many reasons why you may or may not choose to circumcise your newborn, including religious or cultural reasons and medical considerations. We’re happy to answer any questions you might have and help you decide what’s right for your family.

While circumcision is not entirely painless, we take steps to make sure that the process is as gentle as possible for your baby. We use a locally injected anesthetic to reduce pain, play soothing music, and with parents’ permission we also give babies pacifiers dipped in sugar water to help minimize their discomfort. Doctor Ryan has years of experience performing circumcisions and takes the time to ensure that they’re done right.

We recommend that babies receive either injected or oral vitamin K supplementation before being circumcised to limit the risk of bleeding, but we welcome vitamin K questions/concerns and are happy to chat more about them.

What do I need to know after my baby’s circumcision?

It’s common for babies to be more fussy than usual for the first day or so after circumcision. They may be sleepy and may not feed as well the day of the procedure. If your baby seems uncomfortable, you can give him regular doses of Tylenol over the first 24-48 hours. See the chart below for infant Tylenol dosing based on weight.

You may notice a small amount of bleeding, especially on the underside of the penis where the foreskin was cut. The redness and swelling will go away as healing occurs over the next few days. You may also see some yellowish drainage in the area, and this is normal as well. Usually it would form a scab, but since it’s kept damp inside the diaper it does not become dry and crusted.

Apply a small amount of Vaseline to the head of the penis each time you change your baby’s diaper for the first 5 days. This will prevent it from sticking to the diaper as it heals.

The circumcision may not look the way you expected it to for the first couple of days, and that’s normal. We like to compare it to getting your hair cut - it takes about 5 days to go from a haircut to a good-looking haircut, and the same goes for circumcisions.
